Join our team this fall!

The Underground is now accepting applications for our fall 2017 candidacy program! Our candidacy program is the first step to becoming a full-time staff member of The Underground.

In order to make sure that all staff members have the proper training, skills, and knowledge of The Underground’s protocol to succeed in their jobs, everyone must complete a candidacy period, regardless of skill set when coming to the publication. During our candidacy program, candidates can expect to contribute articles and photo to our site, hear from stakeholders in the Penn State community, and receive mentorship from current staff members.

Right now, we’re looking for all sorts of people – from writers to broadcasters to editors to photographers/videographers to marketing, brand ambassadors, public relations/events and more.

We’ll be honest, though: writing for The Underground does take work. We want your stories to be great and we’ll push you to get there through our editors, writer evaluations and workshops.

Contributors for The Underground are expected to submit work on a weekly basis and be available for weekly section meetings and bi-weekly all staff meetings. In addition, the ideal contributor should be able to work on tight deadlines and short notices.

While we are a news media site, no prior experience is required. All we want is a willingness to learn with a positive attitude.

It is the goal of The Underground to recruit and retain a staff that is diverse and representative of the entire student body. It is for that reason, as well as basic human decency, that The Underground does not discriminate against any person while hiring staff based on their race, color, religion, sex, gender, sexuality, national origin, age, disability, veteran status or academic status, including year and major.

The Underground will strive to build a staff that includes many different individual perspectives, identities and experiences because only with a diverse and inclusive staff will the publication will be able to accomplish its goals of representing the entire student body.
