Football schedules show Pitt vs. Penn State series to end, Mountain West Conference matchups
With the release of the 2020 and 2021 Penn State football schedules, Penn State has made some major changes to who it will face. Most notably, the famous Pitt-Penn State rivalry has not been renewed; the Blue and White will instead face teams including Virginia Tech, Nevada, and San Jose State.
In 2016, the University of Pittsburgh faced the Nittany Lions in Pittsburgh as the first matchup in an arranged series of four home-and-home games. Pitt defeated Penn State by a score of 42-39, but Penn State reigned victorious in the 2017 game. The teams will face off in Pittsburgh this season and in Beaver Stadium the following season to complete the series.
2020 opponents Nevada and San Jose State are members of the Mountain West Conference. Penn State has a 5-0 record against this conference, having faced Air Force, San Diego State, and Utah State. Nevada finished the 2017 season with a 3-9 record, and San Jose State finished at 2-11.
Penn State will travel to Virginia Tech for its first away game of 2020. This will be the debut contest between the two schools’ football programs; they are tentatively scheduled to play again in Beaver Stadium during the 2025 season.
Representing the Southeastern Conference, Auburn will play at Penn State during week three of the 2021 season. This will be the third meeting between the schools, as Penn State defeated Auburn in 1996 with a score of 43-13 but fell to the Tigers in 2003 by a score of 13-9.
The Nittany Lions will play nine Big Ten teams in both 2020 and 2021 in accordance with Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delaney’s 2016 announcement that Big Ten schedules must include nine conference games and one non-conference game against a power league school.
